  1. Also known as ping pong, table 
  2. tennis evolved from lawn tennis 
  3. in the 1870s. Its  popularity 
  4. waxed and waned in Europe and 
  5. the US in the latter part of the 
  6. 19th and early 20th century.  But 
  7. the Asians really embraced the 
  8. game, and by the 1950s, the 
  9. Koreans, Japanese and Chinese 
  10. had come to dominate the sport.

  12. Table tennis only became an 
  13. official Olympic event in 1988, 
  14. with four events -- men's and 
  15. women's singles and doubles.  
  16. The Chinese and Koreans have 
  17. dominated the event, but in 1992 
  18. Swede Jan Ove Waldner took 
  19. home the men's Gold.
